The Practical Encyclopedia for Sustainable Living

Autonopedia: the concept

It is utterly vital now to make the all of the knowledge and know-how of living ecologically freely available to all and everyone, without prejudice.

This is the only way to ensure the general concepts catch on and develop everywhere!

There is no place for anyone to claim ownership of such knowledge just because they have written a book, or regard themselves as the only official body etc.

Not everyone can buy the book, take the course, buy the kit or whatever although those that do so will generally still do so, in-fact many more of them will do so because of .

Being more like a good DIY manual or self-help book than a website makes it accessable and understandable to as many people as possible

Computers are becoming ever cheaper, and more rugged and portable. Even wind-up computers are soon to be available to schoolchildren in many parts of the world. It is one form of technology that soon will be found in even the remotest corners of the planet.

Although the internet has harnessed this power to give us the vast evolution in global communication that we are now experiencing it has become a very complex machine and often finding the information you want can be a time consuming and often frustrating experience.

Having a site such as saves much of this time and energy to allow the creative element thrive, to stimulate and enhance the creative and learning process by supplying the necessary information effectively in one place.

By Making It Available As A Download:

By having as a portable application as well as a web site it becomes accessable everywhere on any computer that can accept a CD or a portable flash drive. And soon on any PDA/ phone coupled to a reasonable display or via a computer.

By following the KIS(S) [Keep It Simple (Stupid)] principle we can store a vast amount on one CD or a small pocket flash drive.

This can make it available when and where it is needed, which is generally when doing the job being described, not when hooked up to a phone line.

By having an update mechanism built in it can have auto or manual update via the internet.

This also makes it easier to compile, easier to index and easier to use.

International and Local

What you see on this site is the UK edition and soon will be based around an international edition which will be published along with local editions in many other countries.

The difference being the local pages which cover services, suppliers and information (and language) that are only relevent to that country.

The download will feature links back to the main site(s) from each section, so, for instance, if you were in the renewable energy section and wanted to connect with suppliers or sevices you will click on a link and arrive at arrive at the relevant links page on the on-line site.

This will be the main site or by using the free registration will lead to the local site if desired.

The main site will also have links to local pages in the relevant places as well

Each edition will offer community pages as well. These will focus on a town/city or county level and enable true local participation.

The Internet

And it's problems

There are many people who can access a computer but not the internet or if they can it's for a limited time,
or they are on old dial-up connections maybe in a remote area away from broadband connections, this is so even in rich hi tech countries, yet alone poor low tech ones.

Many sites take ages for pages to load, even between adjacient pages on the same site. And thats on broadband.....

Many websites require plugins and often the latest version.

Flash, PDF etc., although considered standard, are proprietry commercial products not open source.

New versions are regularly released and are not generally backwardly compatable,
(files created with a particular version require the matching version or later plugin even if the file does not use the latest facilities and could have been made and read with earlier versions)

Access via mobile telephone networks and/or satellite connections are all comparatively all slow

Information can take a long time to find on the net and is scattered very widely

Web page presentation varys very widely and few are well made as an actual means of portraying practical content

Web pages are often, (usually) scattered with other content that is on the page, such as page repeated headers, adverts, banners.and other eye distractions.

A good practical manual is not cluttered with irrelevant content, it has a clean clear layout that gets to the point

Vital information is often withheld, and/or only available for a fee..
not everyone can afford a fee.. or have the internet or can pay over the internet even if they can access the internet

ON TOP OF ALL THAT:

Finding comprehensive info & sorting the wheat from the chaff leaves little time to actually do any of it!!

What is often forgotten is that not everyone is comfortable accessing a computer or really adept ...

There is not a coherent focused cross discipline application/encyclopedia of practical content such as this AVAILABLE TO ALL FOR FREE!.

Until now...
