Clearing Drains

Drains become clogged when hair, grease, and soap residues accumulate over a period of time. Commercial drain cleaners use a highly corrosive chemical, usually caustic soda (lye), to dissolve the blockage. Instead, these are non-toxic alternatives for keeping your drains clear.

Unclogging drains with a plunger
the best, way to unclog a blocked drain is to use a rubber plunger (available from any hardware store).
First remove the strainer if you have one, and make sure the drain is completely covered with the plunger as you need to create sufficient pressure to break through the clogging substance.
To prevent drains from becoming blocked in the first place, always use a strainer in your bathroom sink and bath drains to trap loose hair, and never pour grease down your kitchen sink.

Natural drain cleaner
Use the following formula once a week to keep your kitchen sink drain clean and free of soap and grease residues that can accumulate and cause blockages.

125ml (4fl oz) distilled white vinegar
Pour the baking soda, salt, and white vinegar through the plughole and into the drain.
Wait 15 minutes, and pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain.
Take care to not burn yourself with the steam.
