Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Constant, repetitive hand movements can cause inflammation and swelling of tissues. This pinches the nerves passing through the narrow opening (the carpal tunnel) in the wrist bones. Symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hands; the pain may radiate up the arm and shoulder.
Use cold compresses to relieve pain
Applying cold packs to the affected wrist can help to shrink the swelling,
ease the inflammation, and relieve the pain associated with carpal tunnel
syndrome. Place a cold gel pack or ice pack on the affected wrist for 15 minutes
and then take a break for 15 minutes. Repeat the sequence as often as desired
until the pain has been relieved.
Wrist exercises
Gentle wrist exercises can help by opening up the carpal tunnel and taking
pressure off the nerve. Bend your elbows, bringing your hands up into the
air, and rotate your wrists in circles for one minute. Follow by clenching
your fists gently and then spreading your fingers wide apart; repeat ten times.
It's most helpful to repeat these exercises often throughout the day.
Stretch out pain
Gentle stretching helps to ease pain and stiffness in your back. Lie flat
on your back with one leg straight out in front of you and the other knee
bent Gently pull your bent knee into your chest, keeping your lower back flat
by pressing down into the floor Hold for ten seconds, release, and repeat
with the other leg. Work up to three sets of ten repetitions each.
